Bad smell from the air conditioner — causes and cleaning
The indoor unit is always damp: water collects on the coil while cooling. Together with dust this is a good place for mould and bacteria, so a damp or sour smell appears when the unit starts. Rinsing the filter helps little — the smell comes from the coil, the fan and the drain.

What the smell means
- damp or mould — a dirty coil, fan or tray;
- a sewer smell — the drain may be connected to the sewer without a trap;
- a burning or plastic smell — an electronics or motor problem: unplug the unit at once.
What you can do yourself
- rinse the filters and let them dry fully;
- after cooling, run the fan mode for 15–20 minutes so the unit dries — some models have a separate function for this;
- do not spray air freshener into the unit — it masks the smell instead of removing the grime.
How the technician works
The technician does a deep clean: takes the indoor unit apart, washes the coil, the fan wheel and the tray, clears the drain and treats it with a disinfectant. If the drain goes into the sewer, the trap is checked.

Is the smell harmful?
Mould spores and dust can cause allergies and coughing, especially in children and people with allergies. Better not to put the cleaning off.
How soon will the smell come back?
After a deep clean, with regular filter rinsing and drying the unit, usually not before the next season. So plan a cleaning once a year before summer.
