Water leaking from the air conditioner indoor unit — causes and repair
When cooling, the indoor unit pulls moisture from the air — that is normal: the water collects in a tray and leaves through the drain pipe outside. If water drips into the room, its path is blocked somewhere or the unit is not level.

Common causes
- the drain pipe or tray is clogged with dirt, mould or insects;
- the drain pipe is broken, kinked or has no slope;
- the indoor unit hangs crooked and water spills over the tray;
- a dirty filter or low refrigerant makes the coil freeze and then thaw;
- in winter, water from the outdoor unit is normal — ice melts in heating mode.
What you can do yourself
- switch the unit off so no more water comes and put a cloth or a container under it;
- rinse the filters;
- look at the end of the drain pipe outside: does water come out while cooling, is the end crushed or sitting in water;
- photograph the unit and where the water runs — it helps the technician find the cause.
How the technician works
The technician cleans the tray and drain, checks the pipe slope and the unit level, and replaces a section of pipe if needed. If the coil freezes, the filters and refrigerant pressure are checked. If water cannot drain by gravity, a condensate pump may be needed.

Is a drip dangerous?
The unit itself is not harmed, but the water damages the wall, floor and furniture and can reach the neighbours below. Better not to run the unit until the technician comes.
Will cleaning fix it?
Often yes: a clogged drain is the most common cause and is cleared during a cleaning. If the pipe or the unit level is the cause, the technician fixes that on site too.
