When the air conditioner is on but the room does not get cooler, the cause can be simple — the wrong mode or a dirty filter. If not, the unit is often short of refrigerant, the outdoor unit is dirty, or the compressor, a fan or the board is faulty.

What you can check yourself
- the remote is set to cooling (❄), not fan or dry, and the set temperature is below the room temperature;
- the filters are clean — a dirty filter chokes the airflow;
- the outdoor unit runs: its fan turns and you can hear it;
- windows and the door are closed and the room is not too large for the unit.
Common causes
- refrigerant is low because of a leak — pipes and joints frost over or the outdoor unit hardly blows warm air;
- the outdoor coil is clogged with dust or leaves and cannot shed heat;
- the outdoor fan or compressor does not start — often a capacitor or the board;
- a temperature sensor reads wrong.
How the technician works
The technician measures the refrigerant pressure, the air temperature in and out, the compressor current and checks the fans. If refrigerant is low, the leak is found first — recharging without fixing it helps only for a while.
