Air conditioner noisy or vibrating — causes and repair

What the sound means
- rustling or whistling in the indoor unit — a dirty filter or fan;
- rattling or grinding — something touches the fan wheel or a bearing is wearing out;
- the outdoor unit shakes the wall or balcony — a loose bracket or bolts, worn rubber mounts;
- a heavy compressor hum or frequent on-off cycling — a board, capacitor or refrigerant problem.
What you can do yourself
- rinse the filters and check that the indoor unit panel is fully closed;
- look at the outdoor unit: no leaves or objects on or under it;
- record the sound on your phone — it tells the technician a lot.
How the technician works
The technician finds the source of the sound, cleans the unit, tightens the bracket and replaces worn mounts, or the fan bearing or motor if needed. For compressor noise the current and refrigerant pressure are checked. The price of a part is agreed separately.

Can I keep using a noisy unit?
If it has only become louder, usually yes. If there is rattling, a burning smell or strong vibration, switch it off and wait for the technician so the damage does not grow.
Why is a new unit noisy?
Often it is the installation: the unit is not level, the outdoor unit is not fixed firmly or a pipe touches the wall. The technician fixes this on site.
