Heating water is hot and often dirty, so a leak quickly damages the floor and the ceiling below. Stop the water first; the technician then finds where it leaks and repairs or replaces the part.

What to do right away
- if a radiator leaks, close both of its valves;
- if there are no valves or a pipe leaks, switch off the boiler and close the heating valves at the boiler;
- put a container under it, lay a cloth down and move furniture and appliances away;
- do not touch a hot radiator or pipe with bare hands;
- if water is going down, warn the neighbours below.
Where leaks usually are
- the radiator valve or its joint with the pipe — often a new seal or valve is enough;
- between radiator sections — the gasket is replaced on aluminium or cast-iron radiators, sometimes the whole radiator;
- the radiator body — rust has eaten through from inside; such a radiator is replaced;
- a pipe or its joint — the section or fitting is replaced;
- a damp patch on a wall or floor with no radiator nearby — a hidden pipe; the technician locates it.
How the technician works
The technician finds the exact leak, drains the necessary part of the system and replaces the seal, valve, fitting, pipe section or radiator. Then the system is refilled, bled and brought back to pressure, and the technician checks that it no longer leaks.
The technician agrees the price of the work and parts after an inspection.

Better not: small leaks often grow, the system loses pressure and the boiler shuts off. Put a container under it and send the technician a photo.
