What the symptom tells you
- water keeps running into the bowl — the flush valve seal or the float;
- the cistern fills slowly or not at all — a blocked fill valve or filter, or a closed stop valve;
- the button sticks or does not return — the button mechanism;
- weak flush — the water level in the cistern is too low;
- dripping under the cistern or where it meets the bowl — a seal or the bolts.
What you can check yourself
Lift the cistern lid and look: if water flows into the overflow tube, the float is set too high or the fill valve does not close. If the level is normal but water still runs, the flush valve is not sealing. The cistern stop valve is usually below or beside it — close it to stop the water until the plumber arrives.
How the plumber works
The plumber finds which part has failed and replaces the seal, float, fill or flush mechanism, often with a universal one if the original is no longer sold. A concealed cistern of a wall-hung toilet is reached through the flush plate opening.
