When pipes are worth replacing

• old steel pipes show rust and damp patches;
• the water is yellowish or rusty, especially in the morning;
• the flow is weak although the neighbours' is fine;
• a renovation moves the kitchen or bathroom, or needs new points — washing machine, dishwasher, water heater.

Material and layout

Most common now are polypropylene (welded into one solid line) and multilayer pipe (bends and runs easily). The plumber will advise what suits your flat and whether the pipes go inside the wall or exposed.

A filter and, if needed, a pressure regulator after the main valve are useful, and each point should have its own valve so that one repair does not leave the whole flat without water.

How the work goes

The plumber inspects the flat, lists the points with you, shuts off the water, removes the old pipes and fits new ones. The line is pressure-tested before the wall is closed.
