- the empty drum wobbles up and down and knocks;

What you can check yourself
- unplug the machine, open the door and rock the empty drum up and down by hand: noticeable play and knocking point to the bearings;
- check that no coin or underwire is stuck between the drum and the tub — that also causes noise;
- record the sound during the spin — it helps the technician.
How the technician works
To reach the bearings the machine is almost fully taken apart and the tub removed. The bearings and seal are always replaced together.
On some models the tub is sealed (welded). Then the whole tub is replaced, or the repair is no longer worth it. The technician tells you after the diagnosis, before you agree on a price.
After reassembly the technician runs a spin to check that the noise has gone and nothing leaks.
