When the boiler runs but a radiator stays cold or only half warm, the cause is often air, a closed valve or sludge. The pattern itself — which radiator and which part of it stays cold — already says a lot about the cause.

What the pattern tells you
- cold at the top, warm at the bottom — air in the radiator;
- warm at the top, cold at the bottom — sludge at the bottom;
- one radiator completely cold — a closed valve, a stuck thermostatic valve or a blocked pipe;
- all radiators weak — low pressure, the boiler pump or the settings;
- warm near the boiler, cold further away — the system is unbalanced or full of sludge.
What you can check yourself
- valves: make sure both valves on the radiator are fully open;
- thermostatic head: turn it to maximum and wait a few minutes;
- pressure: the boiler gauge usually shows 1–2 bar on a cold system; if it is lower, see the page on pressure drop;
- air: if the radiator has a bleed valve, wait until the system has cooled, hold a cloth under it and open it gently until water comes out instead of air. Then check the pressure.
How the technician works
The technician checks the radiator valves and thermostatic valve, the boiler pump, the pressure and the settings, and measures what temperature reaches each radiator.
The fix depends on the cause: bleeding, replacing a valve, balancing the system, flushing a radiator or the whole system, and sometimes replacing an old radiator. The technician agrees the price after the diagnosis.
