Where the clog is
- only one sink or shower — usually the trap or its pipe;
- kitchen sink — grease in the pipe, often up to the wall;
- toilet — an object, or built-up paper or wet wipes;
- several points at once, or sink water rising in the bath — the flat's main pipe or the building riser.
What you can do yourself
- plunger: cover the overflow hole with a wet cloth and push firmly several times;
- trap: put a bucket under the sink, unscrew the bottom of the bottle trap, clean it and screw it back tightly;
- chemicals: only as instructed, never mix different products and never use a plunger after them — splashes burn skin and eyes;
- if water is backing up at the neighbours too, do not pour more water — it may come up on the floor below.
How the plumber works
The plumber finds where the clog is and chooses a method: taking the trap apart, a drain snake in the pipe, or a machine for long, hard blockages. Then water is run from several points to check it drains freely.
If clogs keep coming back, the cause may be too little slope, deposits in an old cast-iron pipe or a damaged section, and the plumber will suggest replacing the pipe.
