Sewer smell in a flat — causes and fixes, Tbilisi

A trap always holds a little water — a seal that keeps sewer air out of the flat. A smell usually means that water has gone, or a trap or joint is no longer sealed.

We usually reply within 3–5 minutes during response hours.

Tell us what you need done and your district. A photo is optional.

You agree on the price and timing with the professional.

Common causes

  • a rarely used sink, shower drain or bath — the water in the trap has evaporated;
  • hair and sludge in a trap or drain that smell themselves;
  • a trap or flexible connector not sealed into the drain;
  • the joint at the toilet base or its seal;
  • a washing machine or dishwasher drain hose without a trap;
  • a cracked old cast-iron pipe or the shared riser.

What you can check yourself

  • run water into every rarely used point — sink, shower drain, bidet;
  • clean the sink trap and the shower drain grate;
  • check that the connectors and trap joints sit tightly in the drain pipe;
  • sniff around: is the smell stronger at one point or even across the room?

How the plumber works

The plumber checks the traps, drains, joints and toilet base, and replaces or reconnects whatever is not sealed. If everything in the flat is fine, the smell may come from the shared riser or ventilation, which is a matter for the whole building.

Frequently asked questions

The smell only appears when the washing machine runs.

Often the drain hose goes straight into the pipe without a trap, or the machine's filter and door seal are dirty. The plumber will connect the hose correctly.

Can the smell be harmful?

A strong, persistent sewer smell is unpleasant; air the room and do not put off finding the cause. If the smell is very strong, contact a plumber straight away.
