When the door seal needs replacing
The seal is usually replaced when:
- water leaks from under the door or runs down the front panel during a wash;
- there is a tear, hole or crack in the rubber, often in the lower fold;
- the rubber has hardened and no longer seals against the door;
- black mould in the folds will not wash off and the machine smells bad.
Why door seals get damaged
Most often it is items left in pockets: coins, keys, hair clips and bra underwires. They get caught in the fold and cut the rubber during the spin.
Rubber also ages over time, and if the door is always kept shut, moisture collects in the folds and mould appears.
What you can check yourself
- unplug the machine and open out the rubber folds by hand — look for a hole or a stuck object;
- make sure the leak really comes from the door: water can also come from the filter, a hose or the detergent drawer;
- take photos of the damage and the model sticker so the technician can find the seal in advance.
How the technician replaces it
Door seals are model-specific, so the technician finds one by brand and model — original or a matching equivalent.
The technician removes the two clamps holding the rubber (outer and inner), on some models also the front panel, fits the new seal and secures the clamps. Finally they run a wash to check there is no more leak.
Patching a small hole only works as a temporary fix: glue does not cope well with vibration and hot water. The technician tells you what makes sense after inspecting it.
